INTERNET SAFETY
Page 6
All the classrooms at each of the Leary School programs now have computers. With computers, our students are able to produce written work, research topics of interest for their classwork on the Internet and read news from around the world. With this technology, however, comes responsibility. Each of us – staff and students – share in this responsibility.
To help our students understand the responsibilities of Internet use, we have developed the following “Student Internet Pledge”. Each classroom, after a discussion of the Pledge, asks their students to sign this document.
We believe that the educational benefits to students and teachers through access to online services and the internet far exceed any potential disadvantages of such access. The ultimate responsibility of setting and overseeing guidelines that students must follow when accessing the Internet and online services must lie with all of us. Students will use only Internet sites or online services selected or approved for them by Leary School staff. Staff will make every effort to monitor use and assure that sites they select are safe for children, support the educational objectives of the school, and have a strong information advantage. Students, at the discretion of their teachers and with a Leary School, Virginia signed pledge form may be permitted to conduct broader internet searches. Teachers will make every effort to monitor use. Use of the Internet and online services at the Leary School is a privilege, not a right. Students must read, sign and return the attached Internet Pledge before students will be permitted to use online services at Leary School.
Student Internet Pledge
I will:
- Be polite
- Refrain from changing original computer setting of any kind.
- Refrain from writing or sending abusive messages to others.
- Refrain from revealing the home address, telephone number, or any personal information of anyone, including teachers, friends, fellow students, or myself.
- Print only to the designated printer.
- Refrain from becoming a part of any chat room.
- Refrain from attempting to purchase any goods or services offered online.
- Refrain from using the Leary School Internet access for any other purpose than Leary School Staff have asked me to do.
By signing this pledge for Internet use, I understand my responsibility as a user of the Internet, and realize that any infraction will cancel my use privileges and may result in further disciplinary action, including suspension from school.

In addition, Leary School maintains internet filters on all of its computers, network, and other devices, on which students will have access to the World Wide Web.
We hope that these actions will allow our students to enjoy the many advantages of computers while ensuring that their safety is maintained. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Program Director at your child’s school.
