We welcomed the 2008/2009 school year with a renewed energy and focus on how to best help our students achieve their educational, behavioral and social/emotional goals. We welcomed several new staff members and a number of new students to our program. A central focus of the new school year is to continue to strengthen our academic programming which included the purchase of two SMART boards. For those of you who are not familiar with the SMART boards, they are large interactive white boards that are used for teaching. The boards create an opportunity to make lessons and learning activities more fun and interactive.
On October 1st, we held an Open House at which time we welcomed parents/guardians, LEAs and other professionals involved in our students’ lives to come meet our staff and tour our facility. We were pleased that some people chose to attend and we strive to increase the attendance at future events. I welcome any suggestions on how to make this event more convenient and meaningful. However, please remember that we continue to welcome visits and phone calls from parents/guardians and other team members at any time.
On November 7th, we had our first quarter awards ceremony. The following students were awarded honor roll status by earning all “A’s and B’s”: Marcus Abney, Ryan Lawrence, Kevin Precia, Raynold Proctor, Cedric Streeter, Dermetrius Tann and Roosevelt White. Perfect attendance was awarded to: Lucky Moore and Roosevelt White. The winners of a writing contest about who should be our next president were also recognized at the ceremony. Kevin Yates was awarded first place and Andre Thomas received second place. At the end of the awards ceremony, the Leary School music group “True Reason” made their debut performance, which was a wonderful and celebratory way to end the ceremony. Our quarterly awards ceremony is an important event to which students and staff look forward. We always enjoy recognizing and celebrating our students’ achievements and successes no matter how big or small.
The school enjoyed a Thanksgiving luncheon on November 24th. The lunch was served buffet style and was mostly homemade by Leary School staff members. The food was absolutely delicious and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time.
Our final 2008 holiday celebration was our annual trip to Magill’s Restaurant in December. Students and staff made the trip to Magill’s to enjoy their pizza buffet, games and karaoke. This has become a Leary School tradition and is always enjoyed by everyone.
Also in December, the music group sang three holiday songs at two nearby nursing homes. The senior citizens appeared to truly enjoy and appreciate the performance. The music group had a great time and seemed to feel the positive feelings that are generated from giving to others. We look forward to the next performance by True Reason at our second quarter awards ceremony on January 30th!
We at the Leary School of Virginia are looking forward to a having an educational and fun 2009 and wish everyone a Happy New Year!
As a reminder, please make sure the school has all current
contact information for your child. If there have been changes in emergency contacts or any medications (whether
your son or daughter takes it at school or not), please call
and give the office that information. Thanks!
