Winter 2008 - 2009

Leary School Job Site, Fairfax County
Page 3

Robert Jackson During the first semester of this school year, Leary School JobSite staff and students added the last touches to our latest project house at 6451 Holyoke Drive. The students, under the supervision of the staff, planted new trees, added hardwood flooring to the front foyer, added a handrail on the front porch and cleaned the house in preparation for a buyer. All inspections have been passed; a residential use permit has been obtained and Long and Foster Real Estate Agency has listed this, as well as all of the School’s project houses on Holyoke Drive. The inspector paid the students a tremendous compliment by acknowledging the quality of work they completed. This home is the fourth new home construction on Holyoke Drive; in addition, the Leary School JobSite program also completed a large renovation project next door to this newest home.

This home has three bedrooms, two and a half baths with a “rough-in” for a full bath in the basement. This will allow the owners to expand this area if desired in the future. Hook ups for a washer and dryer will also be located in the basement. The main floor will contain a living room, dining room, and family room. With the exception of the kitchen and the foyer which will be hardwood, all areas will be carpeted. There is recessed lighting on the porch and each room is wired to accommodate ceiling fans. There is a very nice “nook” sitting room attached to the master bedroom.

Moving on to our next project, another two story detached single family home, we are now working on getting all the necessary permits. This house will be similar to the house above with some modifications. The kitchen, dining room and family room will be larger and there will be a walk out basement.

While awaiting the permits, JobSite staff and students have been working in the neighborhood. One neighbor had the students build a garage next to their home. This very nice neighbor has offered to provide the students and staff use of the garage for any inside work or training the staff might have for the students, particularly in inclement weather. Other projects in the neighborhood have included moving appliances, taking large items to the dump, and adding a hand rail to the front entrance of one owner’s house. We are happy to help in this neighborhood – they have been very welcoming and accommodating to us for many years.

The JobSite has welcomed five new students to the program this year. In the classroom, the students have been working on science projects and look forward to participating in the school’s annual Nations’ Day in March. To celebrate Black History Month, the students will be researching a District of Columbia landmark – Ben’s Chili Bowl – and, following that research, a field trip to the restaurant will happen. As you may remember, President Obama and D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty were recently on television at this establishment. The students are really looking forward to this trip!
