Gail Alexanderwicz Dear Parents and Friends of Leary School, Prince George’s County: The first half of the year is winding down. With the support of our dedicated staff, our student body has been busy setting and meeting personal and academic goals. Each quarter in every subject, students complete a hands-on project which allows their creativity to shine. Students in Ms. Robertson’s English classes have worked diligently to create autobiographical reports and shadow boxes which allow each student to imaginatively express and personalize the story of their lives in pictures, designs and through other creative methods. Ms. Puller’s math classes decorated a lovely holiday tree with a variety of geometric shapes the students produced and decorated. The tetrahedrons, hexahedrons, octahedrons and dodecahedrons and icosahedrons were impressive ornaments. Making the ornaments added hands-on fun to every math class. Staff even enjoyed participating in the project. Environmental Science students, during their study of Land Use created blue prints of “environmental friendly” cities as a culminating activity. The middle school class held a mock presidential election as they learned about our nation’s democratic process. The event was a school-wide success. In Mr. Stein’s Music class, students explored rhythmic variations using hand drums and learned to read melodies by playing their own recorder instruments.

The first of two yearly Field Days was held in October. The event was a great success. Students participated in a wide variety of track and field events. Good sportsmanship was maintained throughout the day. One of the overwhelming favorite activities that day was the student versus staff Dodge Ball challenge. Staff played impressive games!

In observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday at Leary School, Prince George’s County, each class had a sit down family style meal with turkey and all the fixings. It gave everyone an opportunity to celebrate and recognize that for which they are thankful.

In our traditional fashion, staff and students alike celebrated the winter holidays at Magills Famous Pizza Restaurant in Annandale, Virginia. Everyone who attended the event enjoyed the all-you-can-eat-buffet, karaoke and video game play. It was a nice way to celebrate the season together before the winter break.

As we move into the second half of the school year, we look forward to more school-wide events that allow staff and students to enjoy each other’s company while staff continues to help students achieve their goals.

As a reminder, please make sure the school has all current contact information for your child. If there have been changes in emergency contacts or any medications (whether your son or daughter takes it at school or not), please call and give the office that information. Thanks!
