The
Dear Parents and Friends of Leary School, Prince George’s County:
Our first semester has come and gone. This school year is the first full year that
our off campus vocational job-site program will be operational. We currently have
11 students participating in this program and we are still recruiting participants.
The students who are part of this program are split into two teams and alternate
days they are on the job-site and days when they work on academics in the classroom.
The teams are reconstructing an entire porch on a home while the residents continue
to reside in the home. Once the porch is complete, the job-site crew will begin renovating
the kitchen.
I would like to introduce our talented new staff members to each of you. Hannah Boettger,
counselor, has been busy since the first day of school having sessions with students
and assisting throughout the program in many ways. Her experience and knowledge make
her a valuable member of the team.
We are very happy to introduce David Stein to you. Mr. Stein teaches Spanish and
music. If you walk down the hall during music time, you will hear our young musicians
enthusiastically playing their percussion instruments. I would also like to introduce
Kim Johnson, teacher assistant. Ms. Johnson has worked tirelessly since the first
day of orientation to prepare for and work with our students. She takes on any duty
assigned with fervor.
We have many students throughout the building working hard to meet personal goals.
Some of our students have behavioral contracts to help support them. We planned a
recent outing to a local restaurant for seven of our students who had adhered to
their contract guidelines. These students set excellent examples for their fellow
classmates and deserved to be recognized.
