Winter 2007 - 2008
Leary School Job Site, Fairfax County

The
current school year has seen much work completed on our project at 6451 Holyoke Drive.
We are fortunate to have been able to work for so many years on this street. We are
within a mile of the school campus and the neighbors have been very welcoming to
us. We are grateful to them for their patience as we complete these projects. We
have now built three new homes on this street and did a large renovation project
on another property – next door to the house we are building now.
As
we work toward the completion of this house, you can see from the pictures how it
looks at this point. We have just finished the drywall and have primed the walls
to get ready for interior painting. One of the things we are proud of with this project
is that, for the first time, the students will be doing the interior painting. Before
this, we have contracted out the painting but this was another aspect of construction
work to which we wanted our students exposed.
Additionally,
we have put in the stairs and will soon begin putting in the trims for the windows,
doors and floors. After that, the kitchen cabinets will be installed and then work
on tiling the two bathrooms will be finished.
The last few steps toward completion will include finish siding on the front of the
house and on the stairs going into the house. Sod and grass seed will be added to
the yard and we may construct either a small porch or stairs going out from the back
of the house.
We
are very happy to introduce Rose Gbadegesin as the new teacher for the JobSite program
this year. Ms. Gbadegesin comes from Leary School, Prince George’s County, and has
been a wonderful addition to our program. Lisa Marckesano continues as the teacher
assistant for the group – she has been with the jobsite program for several years
so her consistency is a plus for our students. We are also happy to introduce Derek
Highsmith to the JobSite as the vocational assistant. Mr. Highsmith has been at the
main campus for several years and at Leary School, Prince George’s County, before
that. We have also welcomed Jenne Lovelace as a one on one assistant for one of our
students this year. The jobsite staff has come together as a strong team this year
and this has benefitted our students.
As we work toward the end of the school year, we look toward the students who may
be finishing their secondary schooling this year. Four of our jobsite students may
be leaving us for graduation, additional post secondary training or employment this
year – exciting for both the students and for the staff who have worked with these
students, sometimes for several years.
