Leary
School Job Site, Loudoun County is off to a successful year. This is our second year
of operation at the Loudoun County campus. We have added a few new faces at the job
site and are happy to have several returning students. We started the 2007-2008 school
year with five students. We have recently added a student from Fairfax County and
are currently interviewing several others to join us at our growing Loudoun County
jobsite program.
Our
staff has grown also. I would like to welcome Ms. Tousignant, the teacher assistant
for both the academic and vocational programs. Ms. Tousignant comes to us with a
background in vocational counseling and is a welcome addition to the Loudoun County
Job Site staff. The other addition to the staff is our new counselor, Ms. Schott.
She will be providing individual and group counseling to the students at the job
site. Ms. Schott has several years of experience working with residential schools
and has been in private practice throughout Northern Virginia. We are very fortunate
to have Ms. Schott and Ms. Tousignant as part of the Job Site program this year.
Rounding out the Job Site staff is Ms. Breisch, who is returning from last year.
Ms. Breisch is the academic teacher and provides excellent classroom instruction
for the students at the Job Site.
The Loudoun County Job Site program is divided into two components. The first is
the academic, in which students work on coursework directed toward completing a high
school diploma. The second is vocational training, which is directed toward helping
students develop skills in the building trades and improve overall work habits that
can be used when they enter the work force.
The first vocational project for the current school year was to paint the back of
the classroom building. New windows were installed in the classrooms and the painting
of the back of the building helped bring a fresh new look to the classroom. The process
was started by power washing the building to provide a clean surface for the paint.
The students then applied two coats of exterior paint to the building. This work
did not go unnoticed; visitors to the Job Site have commented on how nice the building
looks.
After
the building was painted, work began on completing the Hartman Lodge, which was last
year’s project. This project is a remodeling of a building that is planned to be
part of a summer camp program and for weekend retreats. Last year, we “jacked up” the
building and replaced rotten floor joists and sub floor. We then rebuilt the interior
walls and defined the bedroom, bathroom and meeting areas. Before the summer break,
the rough-in plumbing was installed.
The students are currently installing the final touches. The walls are painted, the
flooring is installed and the interior trim is going in. There is still finish work
to be done in the kitchen, and the bathrooms need to be completed. In addition, repairs
to the exterior deck will be finished.
Along
with the vocational work is the important time set aside for Physical Education.
The Job Site takes regular trips to the local park for Physical Education, where
basketball is a popular activity. There are also recreation trips planned throughout
the rest of the school year.
The staff and students at the Loudoun County Job Site are looking forward to an exciting
and rewarding year. With the completion of one project and the starting of another,
as well as the learning taking place in the classroom, we look forward to a very
productive year.
