LEARY SCHOOL JOB SITE
Page 7

The students at the Leary School JobSite are continuing to work toward starting construction on the next single family home on Holyoke Drive. This property, along with an adjacent lot, is next to the renovation project the JobSite completed in 2002 and will be the fourth new home, in addition to the renovated home, on this street. We are thankful to all the neighbors on this street who continue to be helpful and welcoming to our staff and students.

The students, under the supervision of the staff, have now completed a tool shed located at the back of the property. This structure has allowed us to have a place where all the tools can be kept organized and nearby to the construction. The construction of this shed also gave the students an opportunity to participate in and understand how home construction happens. They built floor systems, wall systems, and roof systems, just as they will when the home is being built.

A long time friend of the Leary School, Irv Denton, donated a number of tools and storage units to the JobSite and the students helped with the inventory and separation of these items. We are all very grateful to Mr. Denton - both for this generous donation and for his ongoing support of all the Leary School programs.

There is an existing building on the property that will need to be demolished before any construction can begin and this is an excellent learning tool for the JobSite students. Not only will they have hands on experience in taking a building down, they have been able to see how the process of demolition happens. They were able to go with JobSite staff to the Fairfax County Government Center and go through the process of obtaining a permit for demolition.

However, before demolition can begin, we must first safely seal up an abandoned well that was found on the property. Once it was discovered, the students accompanied staff to the county building and completed the paperwork necessary for an abandoned well. It was then filled with cement in order to ensure that it does not become a safety hazard in the future.

Demolition of the existing building will be the next step and the students will take down this building, starting with the roof and then the existing walls. Before that happens, all the windows and glass will be taken out.

While we are anxious to begin construction on a new home, these smaller projects have been good learning experiences for the students and allowed them to see other aspects of home construction that they would not necessarily see. Having as many experiences and as many different scenarios as possible allows the students to maximize their instruction at the Jobsite.
