Winter 2005
LEARY SCHOOL, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Page 5
Leary
School, Prince George's County, has embarked on another exciting school year! A few
school-wide events have taken place already and we look forward to an action-packed
spring!
Leary School, Prince George's County, celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with a
turkey dinner and all the fixings for each classroom again this year. A generous
donation was made on behalf of the students from Hope Presbyterian Church who has
supplied the meals and all the trimmings for the last several years. We thank them
for their kindness and support and for another wonderful holiday meal! A special
bulletin board in the hallway was dedicated to messages from staff and students about
what we each are thankful for. It serves as a daily reminder to keep the positives
in life foremost on our minds.
This winter holiday was celebrated with a trip to Magill's restaurant in Annandale,
Virginia. Each year, students and staff travel to Magill's to enjoy a buffet lunch
and play the many games available there.
On January 28, 2005, students participated in the first annual "Living Literature
Day" in conjunction with their English classes. Students selected a figure from literature
and created a poster presentation around their choice. Later that day, staff visited
the English classes and students were given the opportunity to explain the life and
times of their chosen character. The students really seemed to enjoy the experience
and had a good time researching their character on the Internet.
On February 24, 2005, students will have the opportunity to participate in a special
assembly to honor Black History Month. Student presentations will include a variety
of performances, readings and several biographies of important African American personalities
throughout our history.
We would also like to take the opportunity to thank our students for their cooperation
during yearly academic and statewide testing. Academic testing, while sometimes difficult
for the student, is very helpful to the teachers and IEP team in preparing each student's
academic program. With new and more rigorous statewide testing requirements in most
jurisdictions, we are working hard to provide each student with an academic program
that will provide as much opportunity for success as is possible.
The Leary School Parent Support Group, led by Program Specialist Gail Alexanderwicz
and Clinical Supervisor Rhea Caracosta, meets twice monthly on Tuesdays from 7:00
- 8:30 p.m. at the Prince George's County campus. Transportation and childcare are
available. Parents/guardians from both campuses are welcome to attend. Please contact
either campus for more information.
We need volunteers! Parents and friends of Leary School, Prince George's County,
are urged to think about volunteering at the school. Current volunteer opportunities
include working one on one with students as a reading tutor and assisting in coaching
any one of the three team sports we participate in through the Metro Athletic League.
Teams are drawn from nonpublic schools throughout Virginia and the state of Maryland.
Please feel free to contact me if you might be interested in participating in this
worthwhile venture.
Monthly awards are given throughout the year during assemblies or scheduled times
in individual homeroom classes. Selected students receive awards for their participation
in the program during each month. These awards include special recognition in academic
areas, attendance, participation in group, and student of the month, to name a few.
All in all, it has been a busy and productive school year thus far!
