 As
of this writing, Leary School of Virginia is in full swing heading toward the beginning
of the second semester of the school year. The close of the second quarter and our
return from the winter break marked anticipated changes in our administrative team
and in some of our classrooms and programs.
Lorraine Celestin, who previously reported program highlights to readers of the Perspective
has changed her focus and role at the school and will be offering her expertise on
a part time basis to the teachers and administrative team.
I know I speak for the staff and the students of the school when I express heartfelt
appreciation to Ms. Celestin for her many contributions to the school in the past
and enthusiastic anticipation of her continued participation, guidance and support.
Also, in the new semester, Kathy Gregorash, Administrative Coordinator and a long
time Leary School administrator, will be taking on a more visible role, assisting
in the day to day operation of the program. We are equally thankful and grateful
for her help.
 The
School also said its farewell to Steve Leary, Team Leader of the Alternative Instruction
Team. Mr. Leary, son of the School's Founders, Al and Barbara Leary, served the school
ably and devotedly for nearly 18 years, facilitating in a myriad of capacities and
contributing in countless ways to the growth and benefit of the students and the
School over the years. Mr. Leary will always be well remembered and highly regarded
as a very effective, empathic, congenial and compassionate professional.
Freddy Mays will lend his extensive experience and leadership to the role of AIA
Team Leader and is ably joined by Derek Highsmith, formerly of Leary School, Prince
George's County, to complete the current AIA team.
The School's Student Services Organization (SSO) has voted to put their energies
behind fundraisers to benefit the tsunami survivors. The SSO is comprised of elected
representatives from each classroom. Many thanks to SSO sponsors, Ms. Jean-Baptiste
and Dr. Caracosta.
Leary School of Virginia participates in the Metro Athletic League. In its first
year of operation, the league was founded by Forman Thompson, a well regarded and
former Leary School of Virginia employee. To learn more about the league, go to http://www.metroathleticleagues.us.
Many thanks to varsity coach, Mr. Pannell and staff sponsor, Mr. Hutchison. Also,
thanks to junior varsity coaches, Ms. Whitted and Ms. Rawlinson. Currently, our teams
are 5-2 and 0-2, respectively.
The Leary School of Virginia Knights Step Team made its debut December 2004. Many
thanks to Step Team sponsors Ms. Brown and Ms. Crawford.
