After
reading Dr Schultze’s thoughts for this edition of the Perspective, I am drawn to
build upon his views, particularly his charge to us as helping adults to maintain
a close awareness of the inner lives of young people.
Throughout our lives, the expressive arts offer us all simultaneously an avenue for
the expression of our inner lives as well as a window for others to appreciate our
unique and intangible qualities as individuals. The arts – music and dance, classical
to hip-hop, visual arts, poetry or journaling all offer us ways of defining and validating
ourselves and our experiences that can transcend our defenses and make our inner
lives viable.
That said, I invite you to take time to reflect upon the role creative expression
may have taken or now takes in your life and to encourage you to go out of your way
to recognize and validate the creative expressions of the children and young adults
in our lives.
Ask children about their creative work and recognize its value by caring for and
displaying their art work,. Talk to a young adult about what they enjoy about the
music they play or encourage them to put their thoughts into writing. Look for opportunities
to help others authenticate their uniqueness.

to what lies within us”. – Oliver Wendell Holmes
 Lincolnia
Educational Foundation is happy to announce an upcoming computer give away event.
Through a generous donation from the General Services Administration (GSA), the Leary
School Programs are the grateful recipients of twenty-five computers to be distributed
free of charge to Leary School students and their families. These are primarily Dell
computers, Pentium Two or above. Most have ten GB hard drives with 256 Ram and 48X
CDs. Each computer comes with a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. The donated computers
are currently in the process of being reloaded with Windows 98 and Microsoft Word.
COMPUTERS IN THE HOME
As we are all more and more aware, computer literacy is an increasingly necessary
skill for many employment opportunities and offer an infinite window for continued
education and research. Almost any job today requires at least some knowledge of
computers; they have changed our world. For young people to reach their full potential
in this new world, they must acquire a certain level of comfort and skill with the
use of computers in daily life.
As in most schools, Leary School students have incorporated computers into their
learning modes and have access to computers and the Internet in their classrooms;
certainly, computer exposure at home can only add to this ongoing learning and can
be a valuable educational tool for the whole family.
Students in a nationwide study in Education Week (2001) reported learning more on
their computers at home. With home access to computer technology, families can take
their time to explore and build computer skills and learn to use them as tools to
enhance knowledge, communication and creativity.
Through the generosity of this recent GSA donation, Lincolnia Educational Foundation
is able to offer our students and their families home computers for the asking. These
computers will be distributed on a first call, first served basis. As an initial
step, we hope that this distribution will be first to families who do not currently
have a family computer.
PLEASE CONTACT THE SCHOOL
Parents interested in a home computer are asked to contact the school to make arrangements
for receiving a used, reloaded computer. The computers are not equipped with modems
required for internet use but information on how to access the internet will be made
available to recipients. Please direct inquiries to me at 703-941-8150; I look forward
to assisting interested families in any way I can.
