As
we head into the last semester of this school year and completion of this new house,
work continues to progress steadily. This single family home has a floor plan similar
to the house that was completed in 2002 with four bedrooms and two and a half baths.
There are, however, some changes – one very visible one has a second porch on the
top floor that will give the owners access through the master bedroom. Since we already
know the new owners of this house, they have been able to work with the staff and
students on personal choices, including, for example, selecting the color of the
siding. Throughout the spring, they will be able to look at choices for counter tops,
flooring, and appliances, among others.
Since the last report in late October, the students, under the supervision of the
staff, have made great strides in the work, including putting in the basement floor,
running the plumbing pipes under the basement floor, and installing the stairways
that go from the first floor to the second floor and from the first floor to the
basement. In addition, they have installed the duct work for the heating and air
conditioning systems as well as the waste and vent system for the plumbing. They
have run the copper pressure pipe that will bring water into the faucets and the
bathroom. They have also completed all the interior walls and the students have put
in the PVC drain pipe for the plumbing. The porches on both the first and second
floor have been finished and are now waiting for inspection on a number of areas.
Inspections on the rough-in for the plumbing, electrical and heating and air conditioning
systems are currently scheduled. Once the inspectors are able to determine that these
systems meet the existing code, the students will begin work on the insulation. Following
that and then further inspection, the students will begin to hang the drywall.
While the winter weather and the cold and snow have impacted on everyone at the construction
site, the work this year has been “under roof” and, with the help of three portable
heaters, we have been able to fight the cold!
In the classroom, students have worked toward both individual academic goals and
group projects that involve classrooms at the main campus. One school-wide event
is States’ Day, where individual classrooms focus research on a particular state
and, at the conclusion of the unit, share the knowledge they have learned with other
classrooms. Four of the students at the JobSite were part of the Extended School
Year week-long camping trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire in the summers
of 2001 and 2002 so New Hampshire was selected as the JobSite’s focus state. Students
developed journals about their trips. They also displayed photos from the trip and
did some extended writing about the attractions in the pictures. Some of the work
the students prepared for this included constructing maps, both geographic and of
the industries in the state, as well as duplicating the state flag. Discussions about
New Hampshire also gave the students the opportunity to talk about the primary elections
that are held there.
Along with students at the main campus, the JobSite staff and students were part
of the Thanksgiving Dinner at Old Country Buffet and the annual winter party for
the students at Magill’s. Both events were greatly enjoyed by everyone from the JobSite.
With two of the JobSite students completing their secondary education and the dedication
and open house for this newest home, we are all looking forward to the end of this
school year. As we get closer to the end of school, more news will be made available
on the dedication and open house – we hope you will all join us that day!
