Leary School, Prince George’s County

Deni Brancheau The students at Leary School, Prince George’s County, will be participating in several school-wide events in 2004. These include the Black History assembly, where students present biographies or otherwise address contributions made by African Americans; States’ Day, where each classroom represents a different state and students travel from “state to state” throughout the day; Nations’ Day, a similar event involving different countries; and the Science Fair. All of these school-wide events are annual happenings that have proved to be beneficial to the student body academically, emotionally, and socially. In addition, they have been downright fun! Parents and guests are always welcome to join the students on these days.

Leary School, Prince George’s County, celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with a turkey dinner and all the fixings for each classroom again this year. A generous donation was made on behalf the students from Hope Presbyterian Church of Mitchellville, Maryland, who supplied the meals and all the trimmings. We thank them for their kindness and support! A special bulletin board in the hallway was dedicated to messages from staff and student about what we each are thankful for. It serves as a daily reminder to keep the positives in life foremost on our minds.

The winter holiday was celebrated with a trip to Magill’s restaurant in Annandale, Virginia. Each year, students and staff travel to Magill’s to enjoy a buffet lunch and play the many games available there.

Our Vikings basketball team has gotten off to a good start this season with a recent 51-21 victory. Coach Highsmith and Coach LaChance continue to lead our student players in positive directions!

We need volunteers! Parents and friends of Leary School, Prince George’s County, are urged to think about volunteering at the school. Current volunteer opportunities include working one on one with students as a reading tutor and assisting in coaching any one of the three team sports we participate in through the Youth Athletic League (YAL). YAL teams are drawn from nonpublic schools throughout Virginia and Maryland. The League has met with great success since its inception several years ago. Currently, as mentioned above, it is basketball season. In a few months, students will be participating in slow pitch softball. Please feel free to contact me if you might be interested in participating in this worthwhile venture.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff who work hard each and every day to help our students grow and learn. Their dedication and effort continue to make Leary School, Prince George’s County, a successful student environment of which we can all be proud.

Please note on the back page of this issue for the make up days we will use for the snow days that occurred during January. Additional snow make up days will occur during Spring Break. When the dates are determine, parents and others will be notified by mail as well as being posted on the School’s website.
