Winter 2003

LEARY SCHOOL JOB SITE
Page 4

At the end of October, we were able to break ground on our newest residential construction project. This house is directly across the street from the house we completed in 2001 and, with some modifications, will resemble that home.

This will be another two story, four bedroom home with two and a half baths. There will be a full basement with a family room, formal dining room, and a laundry room on the first floor. The biggest change from the home we completed in 2001 will be a full second story porch on the front of the house that will open out from one of the front bedrooms. A second addition to this project will be a utility room next to the first floor laundry room that will give the homeowners an additional room for storage.

Since October, as you can see from the pictures that accompany this article, the foundation has been installed and the I-beam put in, along with the floor joists and the subfloor. The I- beam is the structural component that provides the support for the center of the house while the floor joists support the floor and give it its strength. The subfloor is the wood that supports the final flooring, whether that is hardwood or carpeting.

The picture on the left shows the I-beam while the second picture shows the floor joists being installed.

One of the biggest challenges the jobsite staff has had this year is bringing in a large number of students who are new to the jobsite program, as well as more snow and inclement weather than we have seen in several years. Seven students who had been part of the jobsite for two or even three years completed their secondary schooling last June, through either graduation or certificates of completion. So, in more ways than one, we are starting new this year - with many new students working on a new house project. These new students, along with returning students, will have the opportunity to see this project from beginning to end, which will allow them the opportunity to experience a sampling of those skills in the home construction field.

Now that the foundation for the house is in place and the first floor platform built, work on the exterior walls has begun, including framing the walls and building door and window openings.

Monthly pictures will be posted on the Leary School website (www.learyschool.org) so that progress can be seen between issues of this newsletter. As new pictures are posted, the older pictures will be archived so that visitors to the site can look at all aspects of this construction.
