Winter 2003

LEARY SCHOOL, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Page 3

I hope that everyone had a restful and exciting winter holiday! As the new year begins, I would like to take this opportunity to thank several generous benefactors of Leary School, Prince George's County for their support during the first semester of the school year.

The Hope Presbyterian Church once again provided their financial support to make the Thanksgiving Holiday special for our students. The church provided each classroom with a complete turkey dinner with all the trimmings. This "Thanksgiving feast" is an annual event at the school and a much anticipated one for the students! This is the second year that Hope Presbyterian Church has adopted Leary School, Prince George's County, and we are all very thankful for their kindness and generosity. In addition, I would like to thank several other generous contributors: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brancheau, Dr. and Mrs. James Brancheau, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brancheau, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Basile, Mr. and Mrs. Jon Brancheau, and Mr. William Brancheau. Their donations helped with other school-wide special events and will also be used to purchase benches for the school grounds later this spring.

We look forward to several upcoming school-wide events this winter. They include the science fair on January 27th and the Black History program later in February. Both events promise to be well participated in by the student body. I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful job my dedicated staff do each and every day to provide the best level of care possible for our students as Leary School, Prince George's County, works to fulfill its mission, helping students to learn and grow.

Deni Brancheau, M.A.
Program Director

RECYCLING PROJECT

Both campuses of Leary School - Virginia and Maryland - have joined the Green School Project Empty Cartridge Recycling Program. This innovative drop-off program provides a convenient location for collecting laser and ink jet cartridges while it raises funds for our schools. These cartridges, along with old cell phones, will be collected at both schools and then periodically returned to Green School Project, which will provide funds for our schools based on the current market value for the cartridges. The more we collect, the more money and educational programs we receive for our schools.

An inkjet collection bin, clearly marked and accessible, will be placed at each school. We hope you will start sending in your empty laser and ink jet cartridges with your student to their school to help us raise funds. In addition, please urge your neighbors, employer, church or civic groups to contribute their cartridges to us through you. Not only is this an easy way to raise school funds, it also teaches our students valuable lessons about the variety of materials that can be recycled as well as to help them develop life long patterns of recycling.

We will report on the funds received and how they have been used in this newsletter in future issues.

Thank you for your help in this!
