Alan Peck The Leary School Job Site, Loudoun County, is pleased to announce the completion of its second year of operation at the Loudoun County campus and its first graduation class. There were three students in the class of 2008. This was a very proud moment for the graduates. Each of them participated in their base school graduation ceremonies. In addition, we held a graduation lunch at the Olive Garden in Sterling, Virginia. This was a grand affair at which the students were recognized for their accomplishments and were able to share them with family and friends. This was also an opportunity to recognize our student of the year, Daren Grayson. Daren was a transfer student from the Job Site program in Alexandria, and has worked very hard on his goal of graduating from high school. Daren is planning on attending Northern Virginia Community College in the fall, and we wish him continued success.

During the past year, the students continued to work on their academic and vocational pursuits. Our classroom program ranged from 9th -12th grade. Our students’ programming was individualized to meet each one’s graduation requirements. This model appeared to be successful. Our students participated in cross curriculum integrated activities so that they were utilizing their writing and reading skills to meet the requirements of their history or science classes. Each student completed a research based report that involved choosing a topic, researching the topic utilizing the public library as well as internet resources, and writing a paper that cited the sources from which their information came. The students seemed to enjoy this process and talked about their topics regularly. In addition, our Personal Living and Finance class created a mock business, and mock personal budgets based on real data in the work force. This activity was very eye-opening to all of the many expenses of independent living.

The students had a rare opportunity this year in the vocational program. The students were able to remodel an empty room and turn it into a classroom. This room was previously used for storage, and still had the original carpet from the 1970’s. The students cleared out the room, tore up the carpet, painted the walls, put in a drop ceiling, tiled an eating area and assisted in designing their own classroom workspace. Each student stated how much they enjoyed having a part in building their own classroom. In addition, the students began another renovation project on the top floor of the building. This project will be utilized by the Freedom Center for additional office and conference space.

While we have accomplished much this year, there was still time for recreational activities. Some of the highlights of our activities were an adventurous hike to Wolf Rock in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland. We also had a fun time bowling in Leesburg and spent a day at the Ida Lee Recreation Center. We took regular trips to local parks to play basketball and go hiking.

This year has been a very busy one. It is because of the commitment of our staff that we have seen so much success and had so many opportunities. Our staff has consistently shown their willingness to work with each individual who comes to our program and make every effort to meet both their educational and social emotional needs. We look forward to continuing the program next year.
