Summer 2008
Leary School, Prince George’s County

In closing this school year, we can look back and reflect on the many things we did
as a school community!
Several school-wide events took place. Field day was enjoyed during the spring semester
with prizes awarded for a series of track and field events. Basketball tournaments
and even a tug-of-war graced the day. Field day is a fun way for students and staff
to go out and play and enjoy some healthy competition! An End of the Year Picnic
was held which allowed staff and students to relax and enjoy leisure activities in
a near-by park for the day. We continued some of our past school-wide events by having
a Math project competition during the third quarter. Additionally, we celebrated
Nation’s Day. This year our Nation’s Day event focused on Spanish-speaking countries.
Each class researched a nation and transformed their classroom into the nation being
studied. It was exciting to visit Cuba, the Dominican Republic and The Republic of
Ghana as well as other countries all in one day. We tasted the delicious fare the
countries had to offer during our travels and learned many interesting facts while
playing student-created games.
Leary School, Prince George’s County celebrated Thanksgiving with a turkey dinner
with all the fixings for each classroom again this year. A generous donation was
made from the Hope Presbyterian Church which supplied the meals. We are grateful
for their kind and thoughtful support year after year! Students and staff created
a bulletin board depicting messages for what we were most thankful. It is always
important to remain mindful for that which we are thankful.
The Winter Holidays were celebrated with our annual trip to Magill’s Pizza Restaurant
in Alexandria, Virginia. The students and staff had a great time enjoying the buffet
lunch. They then sang karaoke and had the chance to play a variety of video games.
It was a time for students and staff to relax and enjoy time outside of the classroom
together.
Throughout the year, students were recognized for their hard work towards personal
goals both socially and academically. Assemblies were held to recognize specific
student achievement. Our Student of the Year was James Rious; Our Most Improved Student
and the recipient of the Senior of the Year award was Martin Moore. During our final
assembly of the year, many other students were recognized for demonstrating excellence
in academics and personal achievement. On June 5, 2008, we said our final farewell
to seven graduates who successfully completed their high school education. We congratulate
all of the award recipients, the graduates and their families.
We now begin to look forward to the new school year, planning and preparing to help
ensure the success of all of our students. Be safe and enjoy your summer.
