Summer 2007
Leary School Job Site, Loudoun County
Page 5
The Leary School Job Site, Loudoun County program is completing its first year of
operation. It has been an exciting year as we have grown from four students to a
final enrollment of seven students. we have added two new staff members during the
year and we will soon be adding a new classroom to the program, which will bring
us to a total of three classrooms.
During this school year, we had two new staff members join the Loudoun County Job
Site. The first was Janice May, who transferred from the Job Site program in Alexandria
in October to fill the teacher assistant position in Loudoun County. Ms. May spent
four years at the Alexandria campus several years ago before moving to Arizona. She
returned to the area this past summer and rejoined the Leary School staff. Ms. May
helps assist in the academic classroom and at the vocational site. She brings a great
deal of experience to the program and new energy.
In January, Ms. JeanAnne Breisch joined the team as the new classroom teacher. She
previously taught in Montgomery County as a Transition Support teacher. In addition,
she worked as an educational consultant for a private grade school in Frederick County.
She has worked with a variety of students and is excited about the development of
the program at the Loudoun County Job Site.
We began the vocational program this year with an existing cedar lodge. The project
needed a complete renovation. After jacking the house up, the students replaced the
floor joists and sill plate. They put in a new subfloor and reframed the bathrooms
and bedrooms. They plumbed the waste and vent, including the pressure pipe. Students
received training in carpentry, plumbing, demolition, tile work and drywall.
In addition to the academic and vocational aspects to the program, the students have
had several opportunities for recreational and educational field trips. The students
went on several trips to Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg. There, they played
basketball, swam, and worked out . This was a favorite place of the students. In
addition, they have gone bowling and to Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. the students
also regularly went to Lucketts Community Center for basketball and football.
Overall, this has been a successful first year. The students’ academic and vocational
progress has steadily improved. The students have developed a good rapport with one
another and have really come together as a team. We are all looking forward to future
projects and challenges at the site.
