Summer 2007
Leary School of Virginia
Page 4
Dear Parents, Students, Friends and Colleagues,
I am writing you today to share with you my retirement from The Leary Schools. After
twenty five “action packed” years, I will be leaving my position as Director of Programs
for the Lincolnia Educational Foundation this July.
As some of you may recall, I began in 1982, working as the art therapist and art
teacher and, at that time, also began counseling students individually.
In 1990, after eight years in art therapy and counseling, I took on the role of the
school’s Program Specialist, assisting with intakes, case management and administrative
duties.
In 1994, I assumed the role of Program Director of the Virginia campus and since
then have also been part of the development and oversight of other Foundation programs.
My time at the school has been immensely rewarding and I plan to remain an active
member of the school’s Board of Directors and will always be a strong supporter of
the Foundation and its staff, students and alumni.
On a personal note, It has truly been a wonderful gift and privilege to have been
given the opportunity to lead the staff of this school. I know you join me in recognizing
them as a group of remarkably dedicated, caring and determined educators; likewise,
over the years, many young people and their families have allowed me to be part of
their lives. To them and to my co-workers, know that I take with me many, many fond
and unforgettable memories of our experiences together.
Finally, it is with confidence and trust that I pass the program directorship on
to our new Program Director: Ms. Leigh Simpson. Ms. Simpson has been part of our
school for seven years and is a very well regarded and experienced staff member.
Ms. Simpson is a licensed clinical social worker who has proven herself to be a dedicated
and capable professional. I know I can count on the staff, students and friends of
the program to welcome her warmly into her new position and to give her the utmost
support in her new role.
With confidence and trust the geese now beat their wings in step
with the new leader and they continue on their quest. Like these birds, we are
also shifting, and our new leader has the confidence and support of her team.
Each year when the hot summer air begins to give way to fall breezes, geese begin
their yearly migration.. Like our teachers and students, autumn means it is time
to undertake a challenging journey together, joining migrating birds on the flyways
once in fall and then again in spring And also like our students, young birds
can learn to fly by trial and error but they must rely on their older birds to
learn the way to the warmer nesting grounds. If they can’t make that flight with
the others to get directions from the older birds, they never learn the way.
