Summer 2007

Leary School Job Site, Fairfax County
Page 3

Robert JacksonThe Leary School Job Site program in Alexandria continues to work on the newest project at 6451 Holyoke Drive.

This newest single family home construction project is located on one of two lots purchased next to the renovation project on Holyoke Drive that was finished in 2002. Along with many of the lots on Holyoke Drive, these two adjoining properties are somewhat narrower than is typically found in this area. As a result, the two houses that will be constructed over the next few years will be only 20 feet wide. The current house will resemble the second house that was completed on this street. It will have three bedrooms, two and a half baths with a “rough-in” for a full bath in the basement. This will allow the owners to expand this area if, in the future, they want to. The hook ups for a washer and dryer will also be located in the basement. The main floor will contain a living room, dining room, family room, kitchen and an office/study, along with a half bath. There will be a ceiling fan in the family room and, with the exception of the kitchen, all areas will be carpeted.

During the current school year, many things have been finished. We started off the year by putting the rest of the 28 windows in this house. We then finished the siding and framed in a front porch and a roof for the porch. After finishing up the outside, the staff and students moved inside and did all the interior framing. Following the framing, we finished the rough in for the plumbing that included bathtubs, water lines, and drain lines.

The next project was to add the stairways – one going to the second floor and one to the basement. The end of the 2006-2007 school year had the heating and air conditioning in and ready for the summer.

This is the first year that we have been able to offer our jobsite program to students in the Extended School Year program. For some students, this has been a chance to come to the jobsite to help them decide if they have an interest in being part of the program. For others, it is a continuation of the work they were doing during the 2006-2007 school year. This summer, the students have been doing touch up on the framing and painting the shed. The next step will be to start the dry walling. After that, we will be trimming the windows and doors, putting in the kitchen cabinets, tiling the bathrooms, putting in all the appliances and fixtures and painting. Following the installation of the carpeting and the landscaping, the house will be finished and ready for new owners, hopefully by this December.

In the meantime, we are also working on getting ready for our next project. We will be building a house next door to this project that, with some modifications, will be similar to this floor plan. There will be some changes that we hope will make the house appealing to prospective owners.

In the fall, many of our students will be new to the jobsite since seven of the 12 graduates from Leary School this June came from the jobsite program. Congratulations and best wishes to Simon Abromson, Andrew Coates, Maurice Craddock, Preston Jackson, Antonio Medley, Diego Ortiz and Eric Parker. We also send our best wishes and many thanks for all her hard work during this past year to Ms. Frater, the jobsite classroom teacher, who has moved on to another position.

We hope to see you all at the Open House we will have when this house is completed.
