Gail AlexanderwiczNow that the last day of school has come and gone, and the halls are quiet, I reflect on the many activities and events that staff planned to support the students throughout the year. I would like to share a few of the activities with you so you have a small understanding of the hard work and planning (in addition to the on-going daily classroom instruction) that the very dedicated staff of Leary School, Prince George’s County do on an on-going basis.

Each month we held the Monthly Honor Assembly allowing staff to recognize students for their personal strides towards goals they had set for themselves. I recall the pride on many students’ faces as they heard their name called and rose from their seat to come to the front of the multi-purpose room to receive recognition. Some of the students who were recognized shared that they had never received an award before.

Throughout the year, staff also supported the students by planning Instructional Fairs that coincide with units of study. The year was marked with Living Literature Day. This day offered staff and students alike the chance to “become” their favorite author or character from a book for the day. School-wide, people dressed in character. Participants got to answer questions about their characters or authors.

The Math and Science Fairs were also highlights of the academic year. In many cases, students challenged themselves to present projects that were original and creative. It was evident that planning, time and effort were all part of the ribbon winners preparations in both fairs.

This year, the Girls’ Group planned an end of the year luncheon, celebrating women around the world. Each group participant brought in a food item to share from a different country. Information was also shared about young women in that country. The luncheon was a big success. It helped broaden the perspectives of the group participants as they mature into young adults in our society.

What is the end of the year without a Field Day? We had ours and it was great success! Every student present participated and enjoyed a variety of activities planned by a dedicated team of staff volunteers. It is important to reward the hard workers, celebrate the successes of the school year together and field day allows staff to play a little themselves. The students enjoyed seeing staff participate in some events and cheer them on from the side-lines.

For two of our students, June 11th was Graduation Day. We said good-bye and best of luck to two students who had been with us for several years. Staff worked hard to prepare them for that day. The staff knows that they have grown and matured while with us at Leary School, Prince George’s County and that they both have bright futures in store. Best of luck Daniel and Christine!
