Summer 2005
LEARY SCHOOL, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Page 6
In
closing this school year, we can look back and reflect on the many things we, as
a school community, have done!
Several schoolwide events took place during the past year. Field Day was enjoyed
by all during the fall semester and again in the spring. A series of track and field
events, basketball tournaments and football events graced both days. Field Day is
a fun way for students and staff to be outside, play and enjoy some healthy competition!
We added a few new schoolwide events to our calendar this year. These included Living
Literature Day, Living History Day, Famous Person Day, and a Math Fair. Students
also participated in the Science Fair again in 2004-2005.
Leary School, Prince George's County, celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with a
turkey dinner and all the fixings for each classroom again this year. A generous
donation was made on behalf of the students from Hope Presbyterian Church who supplied
the meals. We thank them for their kindness and support! A special bulletin board
in the hallway was dedicated to messages from staff and students about what each
are thankful for. It serves as a daily reminder to keep the positives in life foremost
on our minds.
In February and March, students and staff participated in events to honor Black History
Month. Student presentations were posted on the hallway bulletin boards and in the
classrooms for all to see. These included several poems, biographies and monologues
highlighting important African Americans.
The winter holiday was celebrated with a trip to Magill's restaurant in Annandale,
Virginia. Each year, students and staff travel to Magill's to enjoy a buffet lunch
and play the many games available there.
As has become a tradition, we enjoyed a wonderful "Careers Week" in April. Several
guest speakers came to talk about their professions with the students and staff.
These included such careers as school building maintenance, presented by Ms. Bundy,
Mr. Makle, Ms. Shepard and Mr. Savoy, all from Prince George's County Public Schools,
and careers in the building trades, hosted by Mr. Jackson from the Leary School of
Virginia JobSite program. The event was kicked off by a former Leary School graduate,
Harry Rogers, who talked to the students about what Leary School had meant to him
and what he had done with the education he received as a student here.
Several certificates were awarded throughout the school year to honor student achievements.
Our Student of the Year was David Mackey, our Most
Improved Student was Dale Norfolk, and our Senior
Achievement Award went to Justin Roberts. Our final assembly
recognized several other students who have demonstrated excellence in academics,
attendance, and personal achievement. On June 13, 2005, we said goodbye to eight
graduates who have successfully completed their high school graduation.
All in all, it was a busy and productive school year!
