Summer 2005
SUMMER ACTIVITIES!!
Page 5
This year's Extended School Year (ESY) program focused on the theme of "Diving into
Reading" and, during the five week program, engaged in learning activities on the
meanings of new words, silent and reading aloud experiences, and general knowledge
questions.
While researching books, we came across some book lists that you might want to use
as you make reading choices for your students or family. For younger students, these
titles include: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith
Viorst; Bedtime for Frances by Russell Hoban, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You
See? By Bill Martin, Brother Eagle, Sister Sky, A Message from Chief Seattle by Susan
Jeffers, The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco, Walking the Road to Freedom by Jeri
Ferris, and Poppy and Rye by Avi. For older students, you might want to look for
Absolutely Normal Chaos by Sharon Creech, Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman,
The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Island by Gary Paulsen, Children of the River by Linda
Crew, Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns, The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, or
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. These lists can be found, along with
many others, on the Internet at www.Education-world.com.
Another activity that can be turned into a fun activity for children of all ages
is a scavenger hunt. Why not send students off on a fun and fact-filled scavenger
hunt? An indoor scavenger hunt for facts is a great rainy day activity. Create a
simple ten-question quiz that builds on your children's interests or try the questions
we've written for you below.
- How fast can a giraffe fun? ( giraffe can run 30 miles an hour.)
- How many bones does a baby have at birth? How many bones does an adult have?
(At birth, a baby has 300 bones. An adult has 206 bones because some bones fuse
together as humans grow.)
- Encyclopedia Brown is a favorite book character of many children. What is Encyclopedia's
real first name? (Leroy.)

States. What right did the 19th Amendment to the Bill of Rights grant? (In 1920,
the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.)

year 2000? (The Year of the Dragon.)
