Summer 2004
From the Director of Programs

This coming year marks the tenth anniversary of the Lincolnia Educational Foundation.
For the past ten years, Lincolnia Educational Foundation, Inc. has operated the Leary
School of Virginia and Leary School, Prince George’s County, serving and touching
the lives of hundreds of students and their families. Building upon the four decades
of service to children and adolescents of the Leary School programs, Lincolnia Educational
Foundation has maintained a reputation for successfully delivering specialized education
and treatment to failing, troubled and often disenfranchised youth with emotional,
learning and behavioral problems.
Although it is a simpler task to describe who we are and what we do, it is much more
difficult to put into words what it can be like to be part of an endeavor that joins
forces with young people who strive, often in the face of many obstacles, to grow
and learn in meaningful and exceptional ways. This experience is, among many other
things, very genuine, unique and inspiring.
For those of us who were part of the original Leary School and took part in making
the transition to the Foundation, these ten years seem to have gone by quickly and
we are still relative newcomers to the world of non-profits. Nonetheless, we are
planning to celebrate this milestone in many ways; it is a time to recognize our
growth and accomplishments, to congratulate and thank our founders and early staff
who created and nurtured the school, and to reminisce together as we embark on new
challenges.
One of the ways we would like to celebrate our years together is to create a Community
Cookbook with recipes contributed by the staff and friends of Leary School. This
cookbook will focus on potluck recipes and fast and easy suppers.
Potluck brunches and lunches have long been favorite staff events for as long as
Leary School has been in operation. We are gathering some of these many wonderful
recipes for potlucks to share in this book.
This little cookbook also has a section tailored to the busy lives of teachers and
other professionals. Teachers who typically manage each day to meet the many needs
of their classroom students also find time to prepare an evening meal for their families.
This section will offer tried and true, fast and simple meals for folks who live
their lives on the run.
We hope you will be part of this experience! E-mail, mail, call in or fax your recipes
to either school or to me. Feel free to add any anecdotes or memories that accompany
the recipe.
