Summer 2004

Leary School of Virginia

Lorraine CelestinThe 2003-2004 school year has been a busy year for all of us here at the Leary School of Virginia campus. The end of the school year is a time to reflect on the past and cherish the many memorable moments that we experienced throughout the year.

Some of these moments included the holiday luncheons, the Easter baskets that the Girls’ Group donated to a senior citizen home and the field day physical education activities. As we look back at the last year, we also send our best wishes and farewell to our graduates. This year, nine students finished their secondary schooling. We are very proud of our graduates and wish them the best of luck in their new journey.

We also held our annual Awards Ceremony, during which many students received awards. Five students were presented with the President’s Awards for Outstanding Educational Improvement along with twelve students who were awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.

Eighteen students were presented with the On Levels Award, which recognizes those students who have maintained on-levels status for 80% of the time. Seventeen students were awarded certificates for their exceptional attendance and one student was awarded a mainstreaming award. He will be attending a local high school for part of the day this fall.

Fifteen students were recognized for completing middle school – and cautioned that, in the fall, high school expectations begin!

Six students were identified by the staff for Personal Achievement Awards. These awards recognize personal progress toward the goals the students set for themselves and growth they have demonstrated during the year. One graduating student was also awarded the Senior Achievement Award.

Two students were also recognized by the staff as Most Improved and the Student of the Year!

Our job placement program also concluded a busy year. We would like to extend an extremely sincere thank you to our placement sites: Sunrise House, Petsmart, National Capital Area Food Bank, Sleepy Hollow Manor, Pizza Hut, Goodwin House West, Food for Others, Dollar City, Wilson Library, and Sistah’s Salon.

Congratulations to all the students who were recognized at this annual awards ceremony! Your hard work has made this school year one we will always remember.

I would also like to thank the parents/guardians, students, teachers, secretarial staff, custodial staff, administrative staff and friends of Leary School of Virginia for assisting us in having a successful school year.

Have a safe and wonderful summer.
