Summer 2003
LEARY SCHOOL, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Page 2
In
closing this school year, we can look back and reflect on the many difficult things
we, as a school community, and as a country have had to endure. Many things have
changed for all of us as the result of local and world events. In spite of these
changes, we have come through it all and have managed to have an exciting and action
packed school year!
Several school-wide events took place. The annual States' Day event was held in November.
In this school-wide event, each classroom represents a different state. As visitors
pass through each classroom, they learn about the many aspects of that state presented
in various creative ways by the members of that group. It was an enjoyable and educational
day for all!
In March, students and staff participated in a special assembly to honor Black History
Month. Student presentations included several poetry readings and monologues highlighting
important African Americans.
As has become a tradition, we enjoyed a wonderful Careers Week in April. Several
guest speakers came to talk about their professions with the students and staff.
These included such professions as auto mechanics, nursing, firefighting, and health
care technician.
Nations'
Day was held in May and operates similarly to the States' Day event. Visitors enter
each country where their one-day passport is stamped and they learn about each new
culture in many fun and exciting ways.
In May, the Girls' Group continued what has become an annual event in charitable
giving. Each year, the girls, with their staff sponsors, spend a day at a Ronald
McDonald House in the District of Columbia preparing a meal for a family they will
never meet. These families stay at the Ronald McDonald House as their child receives
health care.
Several school-wide assemblies were held throughout the school year to honor student
achievements. Our final assembly recognized several students who have demonstrated
excellence in academics, attendance, and personal achievement. On June 9, 2003, we
said goodbye to 12 graduates who have successfully completed their high school education.
All in all, it has been a busy and productive school year!
