School of Virginia closed another busy school year with an awards ceremony and a
graduation day. The awards ceremony was held on Friday, June 7th, at the Antioch
Korean Baptist Church, next door to the school.
The award for Best Attendance was presented by Ms. Sullivan to Kevin Yates. Mr. Hutchison
presented certificates to Traveous Brown and Marcus Robertson for their outstanding
work in the woodshop area as well as two additional students for their creativity
in woodshop.
Ms. Colon also recognized the students who were part of the job placement program
during the 2001-2002 school year, including Maurice Edmonds, Delonte Marsh, Randy
Bush, Norman McKinney, Zakat Norris, Vernon Thompson, Emmanuel Jenkins, Tim Hargrove,
Charles Cherry, and Julian Smith.
Mr. Thompson then presented certificates to the students who participated in both
volleyball and basketball. These students included: Daw-ud Johnson, Quante Coleman,
Tim Cooke, Monique Davis-Walker, Darrell Derby, Anthony Destry, James Ellison, Davine
Hamlin, Zakat Norris, William Powell, Marcus Robertson, Michael Scott, Charles Cherry,
Vonda Slade, Antonio Medley, Emmanuel Jenkins, for volleyball and Marcus Campbell,
Emmanuel Jenkins, Marcus Campbell, Tim Hargrove, Daw-ud Johnson, Marcus Robertson,
Zakat Norris, William Powell, Willie Allen, and Richard Robertson for basketball.
Mr. Dogbatse recognized the following students who were part of the junior varsity
basketball team during the year: Richard Robertson, Antwan Ford, Quante Coleman,
Anthony Destry, Duron West, Robin Allen, Charles Hill, Henry Gosier, Antonio Medley,
Jonathan O'Neal, Tyree Moore, Traveous Brown, and Darrell Derby.
Presidential Academic Fitness awards were presented by Ms. King to those students
who have made outstanding academic achievement this year or who demonstrated a significant
commitment to their academic progress. The students who were honored in this category
included Alphonso Carter, Zakat Norris, Henry Gosier, Daw-ud Johnson, James Ellison,
April Thompson, and Thamisha Hunte.
Students who maintained honor roll status during at least six of the nine months
were named. These students were presented certificates from Ms. King: Zakat Norris,
Richard Robertson, Henry Gosier, Darrell Derby, Marcus Robertson, Daw-ud Johnson,
Norman McKinney, James Ellison, April Thompson, William Powell, Quante Coleman, James
Coates, Lakeisha Gooden, Antwan Ford, Monique Davis-Walker, and Jerome Brown.
Ms. Sullivan presented On Levels awards to students who earned 80% of their points
weekly during at least six of the nine months of the school year. Honorees for this
award included: Daw-ud Johnson, Norman McKinney, April Thompson, Tony Nash, Julian
Smith, Zakat Norris, Henry Gosier, Tyree Moore, Kevin Yates, Quante Coleman, and
James Coates.
Ms. Sullivan recognized those students who, as "8th grade graduates" will begin their
high school studies in the fall: Richard Robertson, Henry Gosier, Antonio Medley,
Robin Allen, Jamar Bowman, and Vonda Slade.
Charles Cherry, Dameon Patterson and Kevin Yates were honored with Special Recognition
Awards at this ceremony. The students in this category were nominated by the staff
for their accomplishments during this year. In addition, students who have made individual
progress toward their stated goals were also awarded Personal Achievement Awards.
These students included Norman McKinney, Henry Gosier, and Vonda Slade.
