Summer 2002
LEARY SCHOOL, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY

What
a wonderful problem! We had so many graduates and award recipients this year - more
than any other year in recent history - that it was decided to separate the graduation
from the awards ceremonies and to have those events take place at the individual
schools. This allowed all the graduates and those students who were honored with
year-end awards to receive the kind of attention each of their achievements deserves.
Leary School, Prince George's County, held their Awards Ceremony on Friday, June
7th at the Oxon Hill campus. During this occasion, Ms. Brancheau awarded the President's
Award for Outstanding Educational Improvement to Keith Nedd and Michael
Bryant. Ms. Brancheau also presented the President's Award for Outstanding
Academic Achievement to John Slade, Antoine Carter, Ryland Patterson, Candice
Milstead, Greg Raspberry, and Louis Jones.
Best Attendance awards were presented by Ms. Vera to Antoine Carter
and Louis Jones. Ms. Celestin presented On Level awards to: Timothy
Mills, Antoine Carter, Antoine Brown, Michelle Harris, Aaron Williams, Keith Lee,
Greg Raspberry, Antwon Lee, Mark Gross, and Wayne Mickle. These students were on
level at least six out of the nine months of the school year.
Personal Achievement Awards were also presented by Ms. Celestin.
The teachers provided Ms. Celestin with some thoughts on the accomplishments of these
students during this past year and the reasons they were selected to be honored.
These students included: Antoine Brown, Antwon Lee, Mark Gross, Michelle Harris,
Raynard Cooper, and Charles VanDorn.
In addition, Ms. Vera presented John Slade, Timothy Mills, Antoine Carter, and Michelle
Harris with Special Recognition awards. Again, the teachers for
these students provided Ms. Vera with information about these young people and why
the staff believed that they should be recognized this year.
Mainstreaming Awards were presented by Ms. Brancheau to Mark Gross
and John Slade, who will be returning to public schools in the fall.
Finally, with several of their families and friends in the audience, April Gaskins,
DeAnthony Henson, Greg Lewis, Wayne Mickle, and Alan Gross were recognized as Middle
School graduates. These students will be starting their high school careers
in the fall.
In spite of the many changes that all of us went through this year, including the
death of one of our students, as the year comes to a close, we can look back and
say it was a positive and successful time. We had more graduates this year than ever
before and, through it all, we have come out a stronger school community.
Last, but not least, I would like to thank a wonderful team of dedicated staff who
come to work each day with a united goal: to help our students succeed, not only
in academic endeavors but in life.
I hope that everyone has a fun and restful summer and I look forward to another great
year starting in the fall!
