Spring 2006

Leary School Job Site
Page 3

The job site students have been steadily making progress on the construction of this year's project. The students installed the floor joists for the first floor and then covered the joists with the sub-floor plywood. The sub-floor was glued down and then nailed, which eliminates the pesky squeaking floor as the house gets older. This gave the students a platform on which to build the exterior walls for the first floor of the house.

The walls were laid out on the deck and the studs were put in place making sure the windows were in their proper place. After the studs and windows were in place, the walls were covered with plywood for additional strength. After the plywood was installed, it was time to stand the wall up and nail it into position. This is no small feat, keeping in mind that the sidewalls are fifty feet long and, with a stud every sixteen inches and covered with plywood, it was a very heavy wall. However, with a team effort, the students stood the walls up and were able to get them into position and secure the walls.

After the first floor walls were in position, the process was repeated for the second floor. The floor joists were installed and covered with plywood. The walls were assembled and stood up allowing the shape of the house to take form. The house is twenty feet wide and fifty feet long. There are two floors and a full basement, which will offer plenty of living space for the future owners.

The students are now preparing to install the roof trusses and shingles to keep the weather out of the house. This will allow the house to be secured for the summer until construction can resume in the fall.

In the classroom, there is an excitement with anticipated graduation of our four graduating seniors this year. The seniors have taken their graduation pictures in cap and gown and are finishing up their remaining projects for graduation.

To celebrate the arrival of spring, the job site took a trip Washington, D.C. to see the cherry blossoms while in full bloom. This was a popular outing and special treat for the students to have such a spectacular display so close to home.
