Spring 2006

Leary School, Prince George’s County

It’s hard to believe, but the 2005-2006 school year is already beginning to wind down! The staff and I have worked hard so far this year to continue our work of improving the academic program and helping our students learn and grow. On March 8th, we had our second Open House of the school year. Parents had the opportunity to take a copy of their student’s daily schedule and meet all of the staff who are working with them this school year.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the school year, we introduced some new changes this year. Most students have five or more teachers throughout the course of the day. For some students, this replication of the public school experience has worked well. For others, however, the transition has been very difficult. Many of students still struggle with learning how to move from one class to the other in an efficient manner. Social skill training has been infused within the psycho-educational group as we work with the students in an effort to help them learn how to have successful relationships with one another. It would be very helpful for parents to get involved with this and reinforce the strategies necessary for their child to be successful in this endeavor. We are continuing to strike a balance with those students and may be making some changes as the year progresses and possibly for the next school year.

Our sports program continues. Now that the basketball season is over; softball is next on the agenda!

Monthly award assemblies have occurred throughout the year. Selected students receive awards for their participation in the program during each month. These awards include special recognition in academic areas, attendance, participation in group, and student of the month to name a few. We had a wonderful array of student and staff presentations during our annual Black History Assembly in late February. As always, parent/guardians are invited to attend. The next scheduled award assembly will be held on May 15th.

Leary School, Prince George’s County, celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with a turkey dinner and all the fixings for each classroom again this year. A generous donation was made on behalf of the students from Hope Presbyterian Church who has supplied the meals and all the trimmings for the last several years. We thank them for their kindness and support and for another wonderful holiday meal! A special bulletin board in the hallway was dedicated to messages from staff and students about what we each are thankful for. It serves as a daily reminder to keep the positives in life foremost on our minds.

The winter holiday was celebrated with a trip to Magill’s Famous Pizza Restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia. Each year, students and staff travel to Magill’s to enjoy a buffet lunch and play the many games available there.

Our annual Career Week will be held the week of May 8th; again, as in past years, a variety of speakers will talk with the students about their chosen careers.

We need volunteers! Parents and friends of Leary School are urged to consider volunteering at the school. Current volunteer opportunities include working one to one with students as a reading tutor and assisting in coaching any one of the four team sports we participate in through the Metro Athletic League. League teams are drawn from nonpublic schools throughout Virginia and Maryland. The League has met with great success since its inception last year. A slo-pitch softball team will be formed this spring. Please feel free to contact me if you might be interested in participating in this worthwhile venture.

Again, I look forward to continuing our work together!
