Spring 2002
LEARY SCHOOL JOB SITE
Page 5
The
students at the Leary School Job Site have been steadily working on the newest project
- a major renovation on an existing home on Holyoke Drive in Annandale. This is the
third house for the job site on this street and not the last. When this house is
completed, the students will begin construction of a new home on a lot across the
street from the first two houses the students built.
Since January, the students have hung all the drywall on both levels of the house
and are currently finishing up the drywall. They have taped and are spackling now,
in preparation for painting and putting in the trim. The students have also removed
the old front door and replaced it with a brand new door.
Before the end of the school year, the students will also put in new tiling and fixtures
in both bathrooms and redo the kitchen by putting in new appliances, cabinets, and
flooring.
The last part of this renovation will have the students adding a family room on to
the back of the house. This 14'X28' room will provide for access to the back yard
and will be carpeted with a ceiling fan.
In the classroom, the students recently completed a unit on Italy for the School's
Nations' Day. After studying the culture, customs, and history of the country and
viewing travelogues, the students, with the help of the staff at the job site, completed
this unit with an Italian feast on Nations' Day.
The group has also taken some field trips recently, including to the Museum of Natural
History where they viewed a dinosaur exhibit and an interactive shark exhibit. The
students and staff are also planning a boat trip on the Potomac River later this
month as part of recreation therapy.
The end of this school year will not only see this house finished but with a number
of job site students finishing school - either with a high school diploma or a certificate
of completion. The next two months will find everyone busy, both in the classroom
finishing up requirements for graduation and at the work site putting the last touches
on the house project.
