Spring 2001

LEARY SCHOOL, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Page 3

The students at Leary School, Prince George's County, recently participated in several school-wide events. One of these was a Black History Assembly, where students presented biographies or otherwise addressed contributions made by African Americans. Two other events which offer our students opportunities to learn about other geographical areas are States' Day and Nations' Day. On States' Day, each classroom represents a different state and students throughout the building travel from 'state to state' throughout the day learning from each other about other states in the United States. Nations' Day is a similar event to States' Day and allows each group to learn about a country somewhere in the world and then pass that information to other groups as they visit each classroom throughout the day. The last schoolwide event scheduled for this second semester is our annual Science Fair. All of these school-wide events are annual happenings that have proved to be beneficial to the student body academically, emotionally and socially. In addition, they have been downright fun!

In May, selected students will participate in a boat building project on site sponsored by the Alexandria Seaport Foundation. Under the direction of the Seaport Foundation's staff, the students will learn boat building skills while working together to construct a 12 foot Bevin Skiff at our campus.

The Foundation will bring a shed to the campus that will serve to protect the boat during construction, which is designed to be completed in approximately 27 working hours. After its completion, the students will paint the boat and then, ultimately, launch it on the Potomac River.

The Foundation believes that by taking advantage of our maritime past, young people will not only be building a boat but also the personal values all youth need to play a constructive role in today's society.

We will be documenting this exciting project and hope to share both pictures and personal stories from the participating students soon.

As we near the end of another successful school year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students, parents, staff and volunteers a safe and wonderful summer!

A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH RYAN HOMES

Ryan Homes of Northern Virginia recently made a generous donation of building materials to the job site component of Leary School of Virginia. Through the auspices of Jack Passante, regional production manager, Ryan Homes supplied all the drywall necessary to complete the School's fifth job site project.

This contribution to Leary School of Virginia by a major building corporation speaks incredibly well for Ryan Homes' investment in the Northern Virginia community at large and to special needs students in particular. A small private special education school and a large regional developer helping youth together really embraces the nature of positive community partners.

We were pleased to place a sign in front of our current project that acknowledges this very thoughtful donation and Ryan Homes' incredible donation.

Leary School of Virginia job site students surround the sign that acknowledges Ryan Homes' donation of building materials.
