Spring 2001
LEARY SCHOOOL OF VIRGINIA
Page 2
This edition's article from Leary School of Virginia features a report prepared by
Lulila Crawford, M.S., CCC-SLP, and her students.
"One of the most exciting activities during this semester was the schoolwide Science
Fair. Students learned research skills and methods of analyzing and recording data,
while understanding the process needed to obtain outcomes. The students were also
provided with the opportunity to discuss their findings and answer a variety of questions
regarding their research experience.
Following the Science Fair, four of the students Ms. Crawford works with were selected
to participate in an interviewing process that would enable them to work towards
accomplishing IEP goals and objectives.
The first place winners of the Science Fair, Mr. Holmes' class, presented a working
model of the human heart. Emmanuel Jenkins, Randy Bush, Maurice Edmonds and Darrell
Jones asked the winners a series of questions relating to factual information as
well as individual opinions regarding the project. The students asked questions such
as: how the idea developed, the cost and length of time spent, as well as the materials
used.
Mr. Holmes' class stated that the idea developed from an interest in knowing how
the blood circulates in the heart. They also stated that the project took about two
and a half days to construct. Styrofoam was used to make the heart and lungs and
tubing was used to make the vessels. The research required the most time.
In addition to learning details, the interviewers wanted to know what was learned
most from the project and how it felt to be in first place. The students in Mr. Holmes'
class shared their new found concern for the human body and effective ways to maintain
a healthy heart. The class also stated that they were extremely happy when presented
with the first place award and they felt that they were being rewarded for their
hard work and team effort.
The interviewers were asked what they learned from the Science Fair project. The
students stated that they learned something new about how blood is filtered through
the lungs and runs through the veins carrying bad blood away from the heart. The
interviewers stated that Mr. Holmes' class did a great job presenting their project
to them and that they would not change anything if they had to do the project.
The students were able to ask good questions utilizing complete sentences as well
as new vocabulary words learned through the school year."
Our
students did a fine job in the Science Fair and in preparing this article! The Science
Fair was only one of many exciting events scheduled during the first part of the
second semester. We still have Nations' Day to come and the end of the school year,
which will include our annual awards assembly and graduation, along with the dedication
of our newest job site house. We hope you will join us for both these wonderful occasions.
Many thanks to all the hardworking and caring staff who make achievements possible
every day!
