Dear Friends of the Foundation:

The 2009-2010 school year marks the 45th year of operation for the Leary School programs.

Founded in 1964, the Leary School programs have offered specialized programming for students with exceptional needs for well over four decades.

Programming has evolved over the years, both in response to the changing needs of the students served and as we have introduced innovative and alternative programming.

Our enduring mission has always included reaching out to youth with behavioral, emotional and learning issues and providing specialized education and treatment. The Leary School programs continue to operate nonpublic special education schools in Maryland and Virginia. Additionally, two job site programs are operating in Virginia, in Fairfax and Loudoun counties; and, for the first time, a job site program is now operating in Maryland in Brandywine.

To our way of thinking, a strong logical connection ties our commitment to the student body and the needs of the students to our efforts to offer realistic hands on vocational training and realistic transition programming. Not for everyone but for many, a specialized jobsite program offers students an exciting and motivating option from participating in the traditional classroom environment, even from the now traditional special education classroom experience.

For many students, a transition from special education, whatever that may mean for the student, to life after special education is the one and only driving goal. For these students, our job site programming has been the single factor compelling them to engage, to plan ahead, to believe in schooling and to gain some beginning assurances with respect to their sense of competence and chances of success in adulthood. For quite a few students, the jobsite programming has offered this opportunity. Our staff reports improved motivation, attendance, and academic performance for jobsite students. The Leary School jobsite programs have been hugely successful.

To support the continued development of the specialized job site programming, bringing this programming into the students’ communities, to support our continued work with students with special needs and to support the Foundation’s scholarship funds, we need your help. Please consider donating to the Foundation and please also trust that contributions are used to support essential and successful programming.

Please feel free to come and visit any of our programs. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I am happy to speak with anyone about our programs and the Foundation’s mission.

Respectfully,
Ed Schultze, Ed.D.
Executive Director and President
