Fall 2006
Leary School Job Site, Loudoun County
Page 5
We
are pleased to announce that the Leary School Job Site, Loudoun County officially
opened on September 6th and is growing with each passing day. The program started
with four students and, within the first few weeks has grown to seven. New students
will be joining the group whenever a student is looking for a new placement with
a vocational component.
The current project is a lodge at the Glaydin Center that has fallen into a state
of disrepair. The roof had several leaks which caused the sub-floor and floor joists
to rot out. The goal is to bring the building back to its former state, which will
allow the building to be used as a lodge again with sleeping accommodations on both
ends of the building, two bathrooms, a kitchenette and an open area for group meetings.
The students started the year by reviewing the safety procedures and proper use of
the tools that they would be using. After all safety concerns were covered, the students
started removing all the old carpet and furniture that was inside the building so
that they would have a clear working area. This was important so access could be
made to the sub-floor and floor joists that needed to be removed. Once the students
started removing the sub-floor and floor joists, the damaged material was taken to
an area outside the building for disposal. The students have removed almost one third
of the sub floor and floor joists of the project. The students are now beginning
to replace the floor joists and installing new 3/4" plywood sub-floors. This process
will continue until all of the bad sections of floor have been removed.
In the classroom, the students are working both individually and in small group settings
on academic coursework. Daily reading and writing is emphasized and the students
begin each day with a journal writing assignment and other warm up activities. In
addition, the students are working on recognizing and working with different styles
of writing. Their current project includes a short paper on a career choice. The
students are also working on social studies projects. Students who are focusing on
World History are researching different religions and how they might relate to the
events of September 11, 2001, while students who are focusing on U.S. History are
investigating how the role of the United States and U.S. History related to September
11th. Students will be making their presentations on poster board or through powerpoint
presentations on the computer.
The students have had a chance to get out and have some recreational time also. In
September, the group took a trip to Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg. The group
enjoyed a day of swimming, basketball, weightlifting, and racquetball. In addition,
the group went to the Lucketts Community Center Park and played a spirited game of
basketball. Group activities in the classroom have also served to help the students
learn to work cooperatively and in a group setting.
