Fall 2006
Leary School of Virginia

The
beginning of a new school year is replete with rituals and traditions. The first
day of school, getting to know new classmates, new bus drivers and new books are
just some of the special rites each year. Our rising seniors get a feel for their
new roles on campus and ninth graders begin their credit countdowns.
At Leary School of Virginia, we traditionally get calls or visits from past students
and staff at the beginning of the school year and this year was no exception.
Henry Gosier, class of ’06 came by fresh from his culinary classes in his chef’s
uniform and with gourmet treats. Marcus Robinson, class of ’05, came by on a rare
day off work to touch base with staff and students. Others checked in via phone;
students enrolled as far back as 1982 and later, call us to reminisce and give us
updates on their lives. For senior staff who comprise the core of our faculty, these
calls and visits are treasured, tangible evidence of our labors. For our current
students, as they look forward, these students are concrete examples of “Life after
Leary School:” as they embark on another school year.
As in the 2005-06 school year, we held an Open House during the first week of school,
encouraging our parents and representatives from affiliated organizations to join
us in making our school year productive and fruitful. We were pleased to have the
guests who came and plan a second Open House during the early part of the second
semester. We also used this opportunity to “christen” our new group room in a room
that had previously been a classroom. This is a wonderful space for staff meetings,
SSO meetings, and other school wide meetings.
Our teachers and support staff are committed to partnering with parents and allied
agencies in creating and maintaining a strong educational environment for our students,
to allow them to make academic progress and personal growth.
On a personal note, I was able to add a new tradition to school’s opening by traveling
out to the Foundation’s new campus in Loudon County. The visit was great; although
the new jobsite is still small, it has a wonderful staff and great potential.
Before signing off, I would like to take this opportunity to again thank everyone
who contributed to a productive and positive opening of the new school year and a
successful site review from the Maryland State Department of Education. Well Done!
Below is a group picture of the staff taken at our annual orientation prior to the
opening of the school year from all three campuses – Leary School of Virginia, Leary
School, Prince George’s County, and Leary School Job Site, Loudoun County – a group
of hard working, caring, and dedicated individuals!
