Fall 2006
Leary School Job Site, Fairfax County
Page 3
The
Leary School Job Site program has started another year of building at its Alexandria
campus. The students and staff are eager to continue working on the second year of
construction on the current project at 6451 Holyoke Drive. This is an exciting time
for this project since this is the anticipated year of completion for the project.
This newest single family home construction project is located on one of two lots
purchased next to the renovation project on Holyoke Drive that was finished in 2002.
Along with many of the lots on Holyoke, these two adjoining properties are somewhat
narrower than is typically found in this area. As a result, the two houses that will
be constructed over the next few years will be only 20 feet wide. This house will
resemble the second house that was completed on this street. It will have three bedrooms,
two and a half baths with a “rough-in” for a full bath in the basement. This will
allow the owners to expand this area if, in the future, they want to. The hook ups
for a washer and dryer will also be located in the basement. The main floor will
contain a living room, dining room, family room, kitchen and an office/study, along
with a half bath. There will be a ceiling fan in the family room and, with the exception
of the kitchen, all areas will be carpeted.
The second floor will have three bedrooms – a master bedroom with a full bath and
a sitting area that could be used for a reading room or a nursery. This area has
windows across the back and one side so it will have great lighting. There are two
other bedrooms on this floor in addition to a second full bath in the hallway.
The group started by opening the house up from being secured for the summer. The
students next reviewed the proper use of hand and power tools and then took safety
tests on what they had learned. After successful completion of the safety tests,
the students started building the steps to the back of the house for easy access
to the first floor of the house. The students then went to the front of the house
and started building the front porch of the house. The porch will be 6 feet by 20
feet and have a deck of fiber board. The fiber board is a newer material that replaces
the pressure treated deck boards.
Once the deck was down, the group had a platform to work from to begin installing
the roof over the porch. This will be done by installing pre-made roof trusses, covering
the trusses with plywood and then shingling the roof. After the completion of the
porch roof, the students will begin installing the siding, hopefully before the cold
weather.
In the classroom, we would like to extend a hearty welcome to the new classroom teacher,
Ms. Frater. Ms. Frater comes to the jobsite from the Alexandria main school campus
where she has worked with the older students in a self contained classroom since
the 2004-2005 school year.
