It
is with pleasure and pride that I write to you for the first time as the Program
Director of the Leary School of Prince George’s County. I am currently in my tenth
school year with the Leary School. I am proud to have been a part of many successful
school years. The staff is dedicated to helping each student reach their social/emotional
and academic goals.
Several school-wide events have taken place already this year. We kicked off the
year with an Open House. It was great to see some familiar faces as well as some
new ones. It is always wonderful to meet the parents/guardians of the students with
whom we work. Thank you for all you do to support your child and the work we do with
them. We appreciate you.
Field Day was a big success. Friendly competition and good sportsmanship were displayed
throughout the morning’s events. Awards Assemblies to honor the many students who
achieve personal and academic goals have been held monthly as well.
New this year, each class elected a class representative. The representatives meet
at least once monthly with the Program Managers to discuss any issue or news from
their class. Also new this school year is the school Job Board. Every class has a
job or responsibility throughout the school, such as presenting the morning announcements
or taking responsibility for the attendance, homework, and other positive incentive
drawings done on a weekly basis. Many students have responded with enthusiasm to
the additional responsibility and privileges associated with the Job Board.
Boosting student attendance has been a strong focus of all staff this year. Attendance
incentives are in place to encourage and motivate better attendance. Daily attendance
tickets are issued and weekly drawings held. Excellent attendance for two consecutive
weeks earns the privilege of watching a movie. Perfect attendance for the month earns
those honored students a special luncheon. Thank you for your support in helping
your child to attend school on a regular basis. We recognize that it is not always
easy to do, but so very important for their social/ emotional and academic development.
Like the Leary School of Virginia, we too have two guinea pig mascots. Sebastian
and Dorian are popular with many students and have a therapeutic effect. Many students
request a visit with “the boys” when they need a quiet moment or a chance to re-group.
Care-taking opportunities provide the students with valuable chances to learn pet
care responsibility and proper handling.
Lastly, on behalf of myself and all of the staff, I wish to thank the parents/guardians
and friends of Leary School, Prince George’s County who support our students in so
many ways. Your visits and calls to check on student progress are appreciated. We
could not do the hard work we do without your support.
