Fall 2005

LEARY SCHOOL OF VIRGINIA
Page 2

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to a successful opening of the 2005-2006 school year. We began by starting what we hope will be an ongoing tradition, with an Open House, encouraging our parents and affiliated agencies to join us in making our school year productive and fruitful.

Our Open House also introduced our new and enlarged elementary school classroom and renovated parking lot. This beginning of our school year was marked by the return of several former staff members. It is always a special pleasure to greet returning teachers who are already familiar with our mission and philosophy.

While it is extremely important to have a great beginning, our school year has rapidly gotten underway and our school wide commitment to increasing the achievement of all our students stands out as our primary goal.

Our teachers and support staff are committed to creating and maintaining a strong educational environment and we encourage students to take personal responsibility for their academic progress and personal development.

Just as importantly, however, Leary School continues to maintain its commitment to fostering a creative, nurturing environment that provides opportunities for personal expression and development.

The essay below demonstrates that commitment well. This personal statement on the life of Rosa Parks is offered by one of our seniors, Henry Gosier III.

A Tribute to Rosa Parks
If not for Lady Parks, African Americans would still be following the harsh rules that the whites had forced them to obey for many moons. Too scared to stand up and make a difference by simply sitting down. She was said to have the courage of 100 warriors and the heart of 1,000 mothers. She was known as a true hero to the people in the past and she will be remembered as a role model to the people of today. But in the end, we shall all remember and honor her as a great Hero.

To those who have seen her legacy and to those who can only remember it, she will always be known as a hero of time. Like a star in the night sky, she shines bright and pure, dispelling the shadows that cover the land.

Rosa Parks, you were a brave person and it was an honor learning about your history. I hope that you continue to live on the hearts of every person that wishes to make a difference. May you continue to watch over this world from your seat in the heavens. Though it was a sad ending, you lived a glorious life.

Thank you and farewell.
