Fall 2004
LEARY SCHOOL, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Page 5
The
students at Leary School, Prince George's County, are off to a positive start already
this school year!
The administration and staff look forward to helping the students learn and grow,
both academically and emotionally. The dedication the staff brings to the job is
truly a wonder and I greatly appreciate their efforts on a daily basis.
There are a number of fun events scheduled for November. Through a grant from the
Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the students will have the opportunity to experience hands-on
learning activities related to the Maryland State efforts to "Save the Bay." Students
will participate in a two-day collaborative program with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation
and the Chesapeake Bay Trust. On the first day, students will board the Susquehanna
workboat and learn how the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers impact the Chesapeake Bay.
On the second day of the project, students will do their part to Save the Bay by
hand stenciling on storm drains to help educate and encourage community members not
to litter near the drains. Teachers will be providing curricular activities in the
classroom to prepare the students for this unique learning activity. Components of
environmental science, local, and state government, and English will be featured.
Special thanks go out to recreational therapist Molly Macdonald for applying for
and obtaining this wonderful grant!
Leary School, Prince George's County, will celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with
a turkey dinner and all the fixings for each classroom again this year. A generous
donation has again been made on behalf of the students from Hope Presbyterian Church
which supplies the meals and all the trimmings to the school. We thank them for their
kindness and support! A special bulletin board in the hallway will be dedicated to
messages from staff and students about which each of us is thankful. It serves as
a daily reminder to keep the positives in life foremost on our minds. A special thanks
goes out to Teacher's Assistant Jean Howard for facilitating this wonderful donation
again this year!
As the school year moves forward, the staff and students look forward to many annual
activities such as the Math Fair, Science Fair, and other school wide events, including
monthly assemblies.
The Viking volleyball team has started their volleyball season and everyone looks
forward to another successful year! Go Vikings!
We need volunteers! Parents and friends of Leary School, Prince George's County,
are urged to think about volunteering at the school. Current volunteer opportunities
include working one-on-one with students as a reading tutor and assisting in coaching
any one of the three team sports the school participates in through the Youth Athletic
League (YAL). YAL teams are drawn from nonpublic schools throughout Virginia and
the state of Maryland. The League has met with great success since its inception
several years ago. Currently, as mentioned above, it is volleyball season. In a few
months, basketball will begin and then in the spring, slo-pitch softball. Please
feel free to contact me if you might be interested in participating in this worthwhile
venture.
