Fall 2004
LEARY SCHOOL OF VIRGINIA
Page 4
Welcome
to the 2004-05 school year. The students returned this year full of energy and excitement.
The first day of school was a memorable one. The students arrived eagerly wanting
to see previous teachers and friends and to look around the school building for new
developments. It seems like only a few weeks ago that the 2003-2004 school year was
ending and the staff was wishing everyone a safe and happy summer vacation.
Time is quickly passing by! It is hard to believe that in a few months we will be
ringing in 2005. Time is definitely of the essence. Each school year provides a wonderful
opportunity for the students to experience personal, social and academic growth.
As a program, each year the staff works to assist students in achieving their goals.
Students are encouraged to improve by reaching for higher horizons. It is always
a pleasure to see the students return safe and ready to pursue another year of learning
and growing at Leary School of Virginia.
New and exciting features have been added to the program this school year. One of
the additions is the Leary School store. The school store was developed to allow
students the opportunity to purchase items using bonus points that are earned for
demonstrating acceptable behaviors throughout the school day. The bonus points are
earned during each class period throughout the day. Students have the opportunity
to "cash in" their points daily and select from many items ranging from edible items,
snacks, personal care items, tee shirts, school supplies and small toys for the younger
students. The school store has been a huge success throughout the program. During
the month of September, a special activity was held school wide to "Name the School
Store". This was a week long event that involved students submitting a name for the
school store. The students were very creative in selecting the name. Afterwards,
students/staff voted on a selection. As a result, the Leary School store is now called
Happy Mart. All were in agreement that the name is befitting.
Groups
Three and Four have been instrumental in helping to set up Happy Mart. The students
have played an active role in maintaining the store daily, keeping inventory of items,
displaying items, and assisting other students with the "cash in" process.
Another new addition to the program this year is a new Physical Education room. This
was an unexpected development that surfaced as a result of a flood that occurred
in the building during the Fourth of July weekend. Several pipes burst throughout
the school building causing damage to several areas, including the Physical Education
area. During the reconstruction process, it was decided to expand the area and to
change the flooring. The area is now much larger with a very bright yellow tile floor.
The students are excited about the area and are enjoying the expansion.
As the school year progresses, I encourage parents/guardians to continue to be an
active part in your child's school year. Working together as a team, I am confident
that we can make a difference.
I look forward to another successful year of working with your child!
