Fall 2004
LEARY SCHOOL JOB SITE
Page 3
This
year, the Leary School JobSite will begin construction on a new single family home.
Once again, the staff and students will be working on the same street where three
other new homes and an extensive home renovation project have been completed. This
new home will be on the lot next to this renovated home. The neighbors have been
very welcoming to the JobSite and we are very happy to be able to continue working
on this street.
Nearly three-quarters of the students are returning this year with six new students
joining the JobSite. As a review for the returning students and to introduce the
new students to the program, the staff started the year by reviewing the program
expectations, going over the safety rules and ensuring that everyone understands
the School's and the JobSite's policies. These review sessions were followed up by
quizzes - on general job site safety as well as on the operation of the power tools,
including the circular saw, drills, and the reciprocating saw.
Another area reviewed was how students earn paychecks from the JobSite. Staff considers
student progress and possible pay scale promotion when, and if, students have demonstrated
positive work attitudes. A discussion was also held on what prospective employers
look for, how to get along with fellow employees and employers, and how to resolve
conflict on the job site. Also influencing student pay are the acquisition of skills
and tenure at the job site. The staff reviews student performance monthly and promotions
are given at that time, if merited.
One of the first tasks the staff and students tackled was working on areas in the
School building that received water damage over the summer. The students, under staff
supervision, hung T-111, which is a form of interior wall paneling, in the PE room,
the woodshop area, classrooms and offices on the lower level.
The design for the house the staff and students will begin working on has now been
finished and the temporary electrical pole for the new building lot has been installed.
While a building permit is being secured, we have done some additional work on two
houses on the street. On one house that we renovated two years ago, the owner asked
that we put up gutters and install new windows on a detached garage on the property.
We also put up shutters on the home we finished last spring along with painting the
foundation and spreading mulch along the foundation. These were all items that we
were happy to finish up for these neighbors.
We are excited about starting this new project. The house will have a formal living
room, dining room, family room, kitchen, three bedrooms, two and a half baths, and
a full basement. When we begin the work, we will include updates on the progress,
along with pictures, on the Leary School website.
