Fall 2003

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS
Page 2

Francesca CreoAs the Leary School programs move forward into our 39th year of operation, we continue to pursue with conviction our mission to serve the children and families in our care.

While all our regular programming is well underway for the new school year, several of us had the opportunity to turn our attention to the celebratory task of joining in with our Virginia neighbors and have a good time with our community by taking part in the yearly Annandale Chamber of Commerce Fall Parade.

The Leary School of Virginia, a long time member of the Annandale Chamber of Commerce was chosen as the 2003 Business of the Year. On October 25th, we joined in with many of the businesses that support our job placement programming and became part in an all-American small town event, the local Fall Parade.

One of our school buses took part in the parade. The bus was decorated by the Leary School JobSite students, filled with family members and friends of Leary School and driven by Robinette Barry, one of our able teaching assistants.

Gene Meale, a member of the Board of Directors of Lincolnia Educational Foundation, Inc. assisted with the parade in his position as a member of the Board of Directors for the Annandale Chamber of Commerce. Many thanks to all involved in this event!

While participating in the parade was a fun way to join with our neighbors, it is also reflective of that part of our mission that seeks to expand our visibility and build community support. However, our "educational community" stretches much further than one neighborhood and encompasses three state jurisdictions of special education programming. As such, I would like to join with Dr. Schultze and echo his request to you all to support our school and mission. This can be done ideologically and politically by promoting an understanding of the need for a broad range of special education programming that allows for the individualization and specialization the Leary Schools have long provided. This can also be done by making time to volunteer at any of our locations. A commitment of a few hours a week can make a significant impact on the educational or emotional growth of one of our students.

Thank you in advance and best wishes to all of you.

Parent Support Group...
Leary School is once again sponsoring a Parents' Support Group. All parents and/or guardians are welcome at these meetings, which run from 7:00 - 8:30 twice a month at Leary School, Prince George's County. Transportation and child care for younger children (ages 4-13) are available upon request.

Many of our parents/guardians tell us that these meetings serve to help them feel heard, understood, and supported by each other and by the group facilitators. Participants exchange thoughts, feelings, and suggestions.

The schedule for this school year includes November 4th and 18th; December 2nd and 16th; January 13th and 27th; February 10th and 24th; March 9th and 23rd; April 12th and 26th; and May 11 and 25th.

If you have any questions, please call Dr. Caracosta at Leary School of Virginia (703-941-8150) or Ms. Alexanderwicz at Leary School, Prince George's County (301-839-5486).
