Fall 2002
LEARY SCHOOL JOB SITE
Page 3
The
beginning of the new school year is a new start in many ways for the Leary School
Job Site. Eight of our students completed their education last year and so we started
this year with many new students. Along with the returning students, this new group
has been involved in getting used to new people, new routines, and a new project.
With the completion of the renovation project in June, we look forward to beginning
construction on a new, two story home on Holyoke Drive in Annandale. This street
has been a wonderful "find" for the Job Site. This will be our fourth home on this
street following two new homes across the street from where we will be building this
newest home and the renovation project, that is on the same side of the street as
our newest property. The neighbors on this street have been welcoming to all of us
and we are so very grateful to them for so many kindnesses.
To finish up our renovation project, we did some repair work to a garage that was
still on the property, including replacing the roof, repairing some existing water
damage, replacing some missing windows and adding vinyl soffit under the roof that
will allow air into the attic but will keep the bugs out.
We also put in an erosion system to help water run off from the back of the property
and made some finishing touches to the interior of the house.
Now, as we anticipate the beginnings of construction, we are teaching the elements
of construction by building two tool sheds. This is a good introduction to a variety
of tasks that the students will be learning during the next two years and helps the
students understand much of the construction process of a house but on a smaller
scale.
In the classroom, the students began the school year with a unit on solar energy
as a complement to the construction part of this program. Following the completion
of this unit, the students divided into two groups and went into the District of
Columbia to visit the Solar Decathlon, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department
of Energy on the National Mall. 14 teams from colleges around the country competed
by building one-bedroom homes that utilized solar energy while still being attractive
and functional.
By the next issue, we hope to have some pictures to show the beginnings of our new
project. These will also be on our website (www.learyschool.org) so please visit
there too.
