Leary School Job Site, Brandywine, is an annex to the Leary School, Prince George’s County, campus and serves students 15-21 of age who have emotional, learning, and behavioral problems. The Leary School Job Site, Brandywine, is owned and operated by the Lincolnia Educational Foundation, a private, non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation.

The Leary School Job Site programs, initially begun during the 1986-87 school year, provide hands on vocational training for a selected group of students in a very nontraditional manner. The students who are part of this program spend their entire day and receive all their educational and vocational schooling at a job site location.

Following the completion of a renovation project during the 1986-87 school year, a building lot was purchased next to this initial project and, over the next two years, a single family home was completed. Since 1986, Leary School students have completed three major house renovations and six new home construction projects in Fairfax and Arlington (Virginia) counties and three major renovations through its Loudoun County Job Site program.

During the 2009-2010 school year, the Maryland State Department of Education approved this newest jobsite as an annex program to the Leary School, Prince George’s County, campus. There is a complete staff assigned to the program, including a special education teacher, a vocational coordinator/teacher, a full time teaching assistant, and a part time counselor.

The students at the Brandywine Jobsite balance academic instruction with hands on vocational experiences, providing each student with valuable and marketable skills in the building and renovation fields. Each student maintains a record of time devoted to the acquisition of specific individual skills and creates a personal portfolio of their experiences. The students and the job site staff have renovated a “senior house”, constructed a food storage building for a nearby food pantry, and currently are working to repair, renovate and make handicap accessible the homes of two low income and/or special needs residents who have been identified by Community Support Systems (CSS), a program that works to meet the needs for food, shelter, and other social services for residents in the community.

Individual counseling, along with physical education, recreation, and case management are delivered onsite, as well as speech and occupational therapy for those students who have been identified through their IEP for these services.

The students who are part of this program leave school with job skills, knowledge that they can be successful at work, and actual experiences in doing such. These students have successful learning and work experiences upon which a happy, productive adulthood and working life should follow.
