Year in Review
Highlights of the past year include:
- Partnerships between Leary School of Virginia and Harris Teeter Food Stores and Ryan
Homes of Northern Virginia were begun that brought building materials, Thanksgiving
dinners and weekly donations of bread and pastries to students at the Alexandria campus.
- A volunteer reading program was begun at both campuses that allowed for students
to receive weekly individual attention.
- Twelve students completed their secondary schooling and another forty were honored
with certificates for attendance, academic achievement, and personal recognition at
June 2000 ceremonies.
- A living mural project, designed to document the creative presence of each student
at the Oxon Hill campus, was initiated. Each year, students will create individual
tiles that will line the upper halls of the main hallway.
- Virginia and Maryland approvals and full accreditation from our respective state
departments of education were maintained.
- A grant from The Washington Post Educational Foundation to establish a drama club
was awarded to two counselors and the art therapist at the Oxon Hill campus.
- Fifth Extended School Year, with all time highest enrollment, was held at the Virginia
campus in July and included three camping trips, including a week long trip to the
White Mountains in New Hampshire.
