Admission Procedures

Students are referred to the various Leary School programs, whether in Virginia or in Maryland, by local public school systems or by other designated agencies or advocates responsible for educational placements. Students are referred from the following jurisdictions:
    District of Columbia
    Anne Arundel County, Maryland
    Baltimore City, Maryland
    Baltimore County
    Charles County, Maryland
    Montgomery County, Maryland
    Prince George's County, Maryland
    Worcester County, Maryland
    Alexandria City, Virginia
    Arlington County, Virginia
    Fairfax County, Virginia
    Falls Church City, Virginia
    Loudoun County, Virginia
    Manassas City, Virginia
    Manassas Park, Virginia
    Prince William County, Virginia
    Stafford County, Virginia
    Spotsylvania County, Virginia
Referrals are mailed to the school office and must include: cover letter from the referring authority to include release of information, cumulative educational records, current Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), most recent triennial evaluations, immunization records, and all other relevant school and medical records that relate to the student's disability and overall progress.

An initial interview with the parent/guardian and student is then scheduled. Admission is contingent upon the student identifying problem areas, which are the basis for the placement and upon which program goals are developed. Once interviews have been concluded, decisions concerning acceptance are made expediently and both the parents and the referring agency are notified of this decision in writing. The parents of students placed by a public agency incur no tuition or other program costs.

At times, students may be accepted at one of the Leary School programs pending the availability of a specific class grouping. In these cases, incoming students are placed on a waiting list and will be placed in a desired class grouping on a "first come, first served" basis.

All students on the waiting list will be reviewed weekly and all parties will be informed of any change in status and expected starting date regularly via written correspondence.
